NPR’s “Kitchen Sisters” recently featured Ships of the Great Lakes Cookbook  in their “Hidden Kitchen” series. During this segment, Calvin Statham Sr., cook aboard the M.V. Oglebay Norton, shares his passion for cooking and serving on the Great Lakes. Calvin is featured in Ships of the Great Lakes Cookbook, offering over 50 of his favorite recipes as testament to the legendary food served on the Great Lakes. During Kitchen Sisters’ national search for unique regional tastes, they selected Hungarian Beef Goulash and Tourtiere (Tor-tee-air) French Canadian (Quebec) Meat Pie among their favorites from Ships of the Great Lakes Cookbook and the region. Visit their site for the complete recipes, plus music from the region and other interesting finds.

This book is about two of my hobbies...um make that passions: cooking and being a boatnerd (a person who follows almost rabidly the comings and goings of Great Lakes freighters or Lakers). Ships of the Great Lakes Cookbook features recipes actually used in the galleys. Each section of the cookbook features a little history about the ships, the crew, and most importantly the cook on board whose recipes are printed. Trying to decide what recipe to cook was hard, but I finally settled on the Walnut Bars from the galley of Dawn Weymouth, steward on the M.V. Indiana Harbor. After tasting these wonderful treats I can definitely see why they are a crew favorite." Visit Sour Dough for a wonderful selection of constantly updated recipes this talented cook prepares and reviews!

“What’s cookin’ on the Great Lakes? This book has the answer, and tasty recipes too. Three years in the making, this title is a terrific achievement from any point of view. It’s a winning work of maritime history, Great Lakes lore and culinary curiosity, illustrated with dozens of photos of contemporary and vintage Great Lakes ships and crews.”

“There is a little ship history, an introduction to each ship’s culinary staff and, of course, recipes featuring specialties and crew favorites. The book begins with the Wisconsin Lake Schooner Denis Sullivan and their full-time cook Laurie Deely, who works dawn to dusk over a wood-fired stove; it ends with recipes from George Yaworski who served as steward aboard the Fitz. (Be sure to check this last section if you need a hearty soup or stew recipe for a church supper.) This would be a wonderful addition to any cookbook collection or Great Lakes Bookshelf.”

“This cookbook serves up tasty sounding recipes along with some truly delicious tidbits about the boats and the people who work the Great Lakes.”

“Watching one of those monster freighter chug under the Mackinac Bridge or squeeze through the locks at Sault Ste. Marie, one usually does not think of great food. But, according to Ships of the Great Lakes Cookbook, the merchant seamen and women aboard those ships do eat like royalty. In fact, good eating is the rule for many commercial ships plying the five Great Lakes.”
